Log into the WordPress dashboard
Entering the WordPress dashboard by adding the word wp-admin to your site’s domain name; For example, if your site’s domain name is www.example.com, the link to your blog’s dashboard will look like www.example.com/wp-admin.
Once you go to this link, you will be asked to log in using the email and password, or by using the username and password, and automatically you will be directed to the WordPress dashboard for the blog.
The WordPress dashboard home page
The main WordPress blog home page consists of 3 main parts, which are Toolbar (Top Bar), Sidebar, and Full Screen that displays the part data you want.
1 – Toolbar (top bar)
The task of this bar is to enable you to go to the pages you need most, so it is a shortcut bar for the most important things that you need constantly, such as:
- Visiting the main blog interface when you are inside the control panel.
- See comments up-to-date
- Add new article, new media file, new page, new member.
- To the left of the bar you will find your name, and as soon as you stand on it, a pop-up message appears with the option to edit your
- profile, and log out of the control panel.
Note: The toolbar appears by default at the top of the blog interface, especially for you when you are logged into the control panel, and the purpose of its appearance is to enable you to access pages such as the control panel, the templates page, … etc. You can stop showing this bar by standing on your name on the left of the bar, then choosing to edit my profile, and a page for your account will open for you, from which you delete the check mark from the side of the box “Show toolbar on the front of the site” and then from the bottom of the page click on Update Account.
2 – Sidebar
You can think that the Sidebar is like the Windows Start menu, as it is the place where you can access all the pages on the WordPress Control Panel, and if you install a new add-on, a shortcut appears for it in this bar, and the following are the default sidebar components:
- Within it is a link to go directly to the main control panel
- And another update link, through which you can update your WordPress script, update installed plugins, update WordPress templates, update translations, and as you can see in the previous image, the blog is updated with the latest update.
From this link you can go directly to articles related to:
- All articles: to view and edit all articles on your blog of all kinds; Like the published articles, scheduled articles, drafts, and special articles that you have moved to the Trash in preparation for deletion.
- Add New: From this link, you can open the Write New Article window.
- Labels: To see the labels you have all of them, and to add new ones.
- Tags: To see the tags you have, and to add new ones.
This link is for all the media that you use directly on your blog, including pictures, audios, videos, etc., and this shortcut consists of two links:
- Library: In it you will find all the media that you previously uploaded on the blog
- Add New: To add a new file to the library.
- All Pages: to display all the pages you have on your blog
- Add New: to add a new page.
You can follow visitors’ comments from this link, and when you go to this comments page, you will find them categorized into pending comments, approved comments, annoying comments, comments that have been moved to the trash.
As for controlling comments, it is only sufficient to stand on any comment and choose the action you want, for example moving it to the trash, agreeing to it, marking it as an annoying comment, or putting a response to it, and so on.
This section is the section that deals with templates and the look of the blog interface, and by default it consists of 7 links, but sometimes when installing some templates or some plugins, additional shortcuts are added in the appearance section, and here is a quick overview of the default links in this section:
- Templates: This link will take you directly to the page specialized in the templates that you use in your blog, and as you know that the template is the form of the interface of the WordPress blog, and from this page specifically you can choose the template, change the template used by choosing another available template or by uploading a paid WordPress template that you bought, for example.
Personalization: A personalization link takes you to a page with many settings that you can change on the template used, such as changing the identity of the site, the colors of the template used, the image of the header, the background, and other settings that differ from one template to another, and this page is distinguished by that you see the effect of changing the settings that you do directly on the blog.
Widgets: They are add-ons that are added to the blog, for example you can add an advertisement above the sidebar, or you can add the subscriptions box to the mailing list, and many widgets you can add through this link easily to the blog without entering into programming complications.
Lists: such as the main menu, side menu and menu in the blog’s bill, and through this link you can add an unlimited number of lists and customize them as you want and suit your blog.
Header: It is the top part of the blog where the logo and the main menu are located, and you can control the header settings from this link.
Background: You can control the background of the template used from this link.
Editor: For professionals who are able to use HTML, CSS, PHP, and the rest of the code on which WordPress blogs are built; Therefore, if you are not professional, we advise you not to approach this section because manipulating simple code may cause the blog to stop working.
WordPress plugins are plug-ins for the template, which work to provide features that are not available in the template itself, or are present in the template, but need a lot of effort in its work, so the plugin makes it easier for you to work; For example, adding, placing ads in the blog, and instead of opening the code editor and placing the ad everywhere you want and may cause some problems, some plugins simplify the matter and it is sufficient to place an ad in the extension as it adjusts everything.
In the plugins section, you will find 3 main links:
Installed Plugins: These are plugins that you previously installed on your WordPress blog, and you can control these plugins as you want, so you can stop their work and they will remain with you until you delete them yourself.
New add-on: WordPress provides thousands of ready-made plugins, and you can just go to this link and search through thousands of ready-made plugins and install the one that works for you, or you can upload the plugin from your computer directly to the blog and install it.
Editor: Plugins are written in programming languages, and you can edit them to add features that you weren’t in through coding as well, which is a section for professionals.
From this section you can add new members to the blog; To assist you in managing it, and every member you add has a rank, so you can add a director, editor, writer, shareholder, or subscriber, and each of these ranks has powers that differ from the other.
For example, the author’s authority depends on his account only, without the ability to modify the accounts, articles and comments of others, and he will only have to write and publish articles and agree to the comments that come on his articles only. As for the role of the editor, he can skip the role of all writers on the blog and perform all of their roles, while the administrator can modify the basic blog settings such as changing templates, controlling the blog, additions, and other powers.
In the members section, you will find the following three links:
All members: where you get to know all the members on the blog, and those who have sufficient authority can control members by deleting or adding.
Add New: To add a new blog member.
Your account: to amend your personal account, such as changing your name, email, personal photo, biography, social network links, password, etc.
This section includes many tools that you may need later, and it includes 3 main sections, which are:
Available Tools: These are simple tools available by default in WordPress blogs, such as the Tag Convertor.
Import: In the event that you are using other content systems and want to import settings and articles from other blogs into the current blog, you will need this link.
Export: I see this link as one of the most important links that should be preserved, as through it you can export all the articles that you publish on your blog as well as the media, thus keeping your articles from being lost in anticipation of any malfunction that may occur for any reason.
From the settings page, you can adjust the blog options and choose the proportion for you:
General: From this link, you can control the general settings in the blog, such as the blog name, title, description line, date and time format, and other general settings.
Writing: From this link, you can choose the default classification, and set the method for publishing by e-mail.
Reading: From this link, you can configure the reading settings, for example the shape of the home page, the number of articles displayed on the home page, and the possibility of articles appearing in search engines or not.
Discussion: From this link, you can control visitor comments and direct them as appropriate for you, and what should be done when someone comments on your article, and you can also prevent some from posting comments by e-mail or their IP number.
